PhUn Week

In 2005, the APS initiated a small-scale pilot test of four events in four states that reached more than 500 students. Each year since then, the number of students participating has increased with similar trends in the number teachers and physiologists volunteering along with a steady expansion of the number of event sites across the nation.

During the pilot phase of PhUn Week, the theme focused on the physiology of exercise and fitness. Students participated in hands-on learning activities, such as a group exercise on heart rate respiration, muscle contractions, and the cardiovascular system. Teachers and physiologists worked together to adapt and customize these materials for the classroom visit. Science teachers who have participated in APS teacher professional development programs developed and tested the material, which are also widely used throughout the school year.
