The Frontiers in Physiology program has developed numerous teaching
tools and resources for middle and high school classrooms and for
teacher professional development. Use the links in this section to find
resources, tools, and planning or evaluation guides developed by
Frontiers teacher fellows, APS members, APS staff and science educators.
Most are catalogued in the APS Archive of Teaching Resources. Be sure
to check the Archive for many more teaching resources (link below).
The navigation at left provides links to the following resources developed through the Frontiers programs:
- Learning Cycle Units: These units are designed for middle and/or
high school use. They include a full learning cycle with engage,
explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate activity sections. Each has been used extensively in classrooms and workshops.
- Teacher-Developed Six Star Science Lesson Plans: These lesson
plans were developed and tested by teachers in the Frontiers in
Physiology summer research and online teacher programs. Most include an
inquiry-based activity (guided or open), equity strategies, use of
Internet resources, and authentic assessment ideas.
- Professional Development Resources: As part of the Local
Outreach Team program, APS developed many resources for planning and
implementing effective professional development activities for
educators. Resources include planning forms and checklists as well as
sample evaluation forms.
- Society Strategies: APS coordinates a seminar series for other
professional science societies to share information on how each
organization supports and promotes K-12 science education. Summaries of
the strategies and ideas are provided here.
