The Online Teacher (OT) Professional Development program is designed for middle and high school science teachers. Over the course of one year, participants explore, apply, and reflect on Six Star Science, a research-based framework for supporting excellence in science education (see Resources below). OTs also engage in online discussions, design and implement experiments, and utilize tools and strategies to enhance student-centered learning by effectively transforming lessons. The program does NOT require teachers to add to their curriculum; instead, it gives teachers tools for enhancing state mandated curricula.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After successfully completing this program, Fellows can:

  • Integrate student-centered inquiry into lessons and teaching.
  • Address equity and learning styles among diverse students.
  • Incorporate technology and Internet-based resources to enhance student learning.
  • Create authentic assessments that focus on both content and process skills.
  • Enhance classroom labs with a better understanding of the scientific research process.
  • Identify and utilize accurate and timely content information
  • Productively reflect on teaching and learning.
  • Transform traditional cookbook labs into engaging, effective Six Star Science lessons that are aligned to your state standards and to the recently released Next Generation Science standards. 
  • Access and utilize toolkits of strategies and resources for enhancing your teaching.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

The program is open to middle and high school science teachers from all science disciplines with a minimum of one full year of teaching experience and currently teaching in a U.S. school at the time of application. The program especially invites teachers working in rural areas, school systems with limited resources, primarily minority schools to apply, and teacher teams from one school site.

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

Eleven lessons spread over the program year address Six Star Science principles, understanding the research process, and transforming a lab. Additional detail is provided in the Course Objectives (see Resources below) and in the Application Information at left.
