Archive Scholars Fellowship

Announcements

The Archive Scholars Online Workshop will help faculty and teachers become both proficient digital library users and contributors to the APS Archive of Teaching Resources Community of Practice. The workshop will be run as an online-only program.

The target audience for the program is undergraduate and high school faculty members who teach biology or life sciences courses. Applicants must demonstrate commitment to improving the teaching and learning in their classrooms, be actively teaching one of six target group courses (high school honors/AP/advanced biology, community college biology or anatomy and physiology, college/university anatomy, physiology, or developmental biology), and provide a recommendation from their institution for participation in the workshop. Applications will be especially sought from minority teachers and/or teachers at primarily minority institutions

After completing the Archive Scholars Online Workshop, faculty will be designated as “Archive Scholars” and will be able to:

  • Describe what digital libraries are, what they offer, and how to identify the characteristics of a digital library collection
  • Demonstrate increased proficiency in using digital libraries to find needed resources
  • Demonstrate proficiency and confidence in rating and sharing digital library resources with colleagues and students using Archive, Facebook, and other online tools.
  • Create a basic Teacher-Recommended Collection that describes their use of a collection of online resources.
  • Create a Six Star Science Collection OR a Vision and Change Collection. that highlights the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Identify further opportunities to use digital library skills in other projects and programs (e.g., NSDL and TUES programs, SEPA programs, etc.).

Workshop activities will engage participants in developing their knowledge and skills and, where possible, activity content will be directly applicable to the specific courses taught by the participants. “Cookbook” activities will be avoided. The online format will include collaboration and discussion among workshop participants and mentoring by the instructors. Participants also will work at the Archive site, rating materials, sharing materials, and creating collections.
