Every school can have slightly different requirements for writing a thesis or dissertation.
First and foremost, discuss with your graduate advisor what is expected. Do you even have to write a dissertation or will it be enough to just package all your published/submitted manuscripts and submit them? Be sure to check with the Graduate School office at your university as well.
