Setting up a new lab can be a time-consuming job. The first thing you need to know is the budget you are working with and whether customized renovations of the lab space will be done to your specifications. Your department chair or supervisor can answer those questions if it wasn’t already negotiated when you accepted the position.
If you are partially renovating the space to allow for specific equipment, it might be a good idea to check with your buildings people to make sure you can get the renovations done you need and that you have the correct outlet capacity, ventilation, gas lines, Internet access, etc.
