Individual Development Plans (IDPs) provide a planning process that helps identify both career objectives and professional development needs. IDPs have been successfully incorporated into the performance review process by many business organizations. Creation of an IDP can be especially helpful in career planning for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the sciences. Participants in this workshop will gain an understanding of how to create their own IDPs and will be provided tools and resources to get started. They will begin the process of self-assessment, learn how to effectively explore career options, become familiar with principles for effective goal setting, and discuss how to find and work with mentors to implement their plan. As part of the career exploration process, participants will have the opportunity to get inside information about a wide variety of career fields by meeting in small groups with scientists who work in diverse environments including academic medical centers, major research universities, small liberal arts college, the military, industry, and government.
