In recent years there has been a research initiative promoting translational science.  The National Institute of Health (NIH) has established a new center for translational sciences called the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCAT) with the ultimate goal of facilitating medical advances in the laboratory to clinical practices. With a growing number of researchers pursuing careers in translational research, we have organized a symposium outlining the career trajectories of several individuals who have chosen this path. The purpose of this year’s Trainee Advisory Committee symposium is to 1) define translational research, 2) discuss the opportunities available through NCAT, and 3) provide examples of laboratories that have been successful in establishing a translational research program.  A representative from National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCAT) will define “Translational Science” and discuss the new NIH Institute.  An M.D. and Ph.D. will provide both a medical doctor's and a basic science researcher’s perspective on the individual paths that led each to translational science with an emphasis on the skill set necessary for success in the field.  The session will conclude with an open forum discussion panel with the invited speakers, as well as several early career investigators who have recently incorporated translational science into their newly established laboratories.
