Work/Life Balance: Every Choice Matters

2011 Mentoring Symposium on
"Work/Life Balance: Every Choice Matters"

(Sponsored by Women in Physiology Committee)

Organizers:
Sue P. Duckles, Ph.D. (University of California, Irvine)
Sarah H. Lindsey, Ph.D. (Wake Forest University)

Increasingly, young scientists are asking themselves, how can I pursue other interests and be a successful scientist as well? For many men and women, having a family is also an important goal, but, especially for women, this may seem impossible in an increasingly competitive world.

One key to achieving all one’s goals in life is having the insight to recognize that every personal choice matters. Knowing one’s goals, following a strategic path, and reassessing periodically is essential. A second key is time management, choosing and learning to use time efficiently, in accordance with all one’s goals. The third presentation asks an experienced two-career couple to discuss the advice they would give to young scientists. Finally, a diverse panel of junior and senior scientists will address questions from the audience.

While no short session could possibly address every issue that a young scientist faces, the proposed symposium offers tools that can be used to help achieve career success. As an adjunct to this session, a list of questions is being developed. The Women in Physiology Committee will seek answers to these questions from a variety of successful scientists, and these will be posted on the APS website.
