Planning for Tenure Review

  Things to find out:

  • Obtain a copy of your university�s tenure, promotion, and evaluation of time and performance review

    What is the maximum probationary period for a tenure-track faculty membe to establish their record for tenure?

    What is the percentage of faculty members in your department have been tenured?
          If you are a woman, is there a difference in tenure rate between women and men faculty members? If so, what is it?

    Do you receive credit for any prior service at another university or prior academic service at your current institution? (If applicable)

    Is there a one-year terminal year of employment should tenure not be granted?

    Do you know your department�s and/or university�s expectations for tenure?

    For research:
                Do you need to have external funding?
                What kind of funding (NIH, NSF, VA, AHA, etc.)?
                How much funding (1 grant, 1 major and 1 minor grant, etc.)?

    For teaching:
                Do you need all excellent student critiques?
                Do you need to have developed new courses?
                Do you need peer critiques of your teaching?

    For service?
                Do you need departmental service?
                Do you need university service?
                Do you need national service?
                Do you need international service?

    Do you know how each is weighted in the tenure decision?

    Who initiates your application for tenure review?
                You? Your department chair?  Your departmental tenure and promotion committee? 

    Do you have a mentor or someone you can go to for advice about tenure besides your chair?

    Do you know what should be included in your tenure application?

    Do you need external letters of recommendation or just names of external references?
                How many names or letters are needed?
     

    Things to do:

     Do you have a tenure folder started?

     Does it include the following?

                □ Biographical information
                □ Employment history
                □ Academic background.

           □ Information on your research:
                □ Statement of your research goals
                □ Current curriculum vitae
                                Publication list
                                Awards/honors
                                Participation at national/international meetings & conferences
                                Invited talks at other institutions
                                Sources of funding
                □ Expansion of your CV
                   
                Expanded description of your role in a grant
                                Copies of grant award letters (amount & date of award, list of PIs)
                                Title, collaborators, and role in grant proposals under development
                                Copies of published, in press, in review papers, books, chapters
                                 Undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral and clinical fellows you have interacted with [include dates and type of interaction (supervisor, thesis committee member)]
                                Current career positions of former students and fellows from lab
                □ Industry contacts and the nature of your interactions
                □ List of involvement at national and international meetings
                                 Invited talks
                                 Meeting participation
                                 Moderator or chair of a scientific session

                Information on your service:
                □ Service to department and university
                                
    Position and membership on committees and length of service
                                 Activities related to students outside of regular departmental duties and alumni activities
                □ Service to national funding agencies
                                 Peer-review study sections
                                 Advisory Boards
                □ Service to professional societies
                                
    Journal editorial duties and editorial board memberships
                                 Conference abstract grader
                                 Committee involvement
                                 Elected office
                                 Involvement in training workshops
                                 Career or education sessions at meetings

           □ Information on your teaching:
                □ Statement of your personal teaching philosophy
                        
    Summary of your main strengths as a teacher
                        
    Courses taught by year
                                 Include a course syllabus for each
                                 Student evaluations
                                 Official documentation of the number of students enrolled
                        
    Teaching awards.
