The Changing Face of Tenure
2013 Mentoring Symposium on
"The Changing Face of Tenure"

(Sponsored by Women in Physiology Committee)

Organizers:
Kathleen P. O’Hagan, Ph.D., Midwestern University
Anne M Dorrance, Ph.D., Michigan State University

The definition of tenure differs across higher education institutions.  In general, tenure means a continuous contract granted by the institution, but what tenure means in terms of position security, and faculty rights and responsibilities varies based on the model adopted by the institution.  Furthermore, tenure may not be an option in certain institutions.  Related issues include:  1) understanding the standards used to determine the awarding of tenure at your institution and proactively planning for success, and 2) the process of applying for tenure at your institution (meeting deadlines, preparing the dossier, requesting references, tenure meetings etc).  Presentations will be on the questions:  What is Tenure?  (Definition, models used across institutions, such as medical schools, large universities, small colleges); Tenure: Planning Ahead (discovering and understanding the standards used for tenure decisions-whether written or “hidden”- and what to do if you if you are not successful); Navigating the Tenure Process (the application process, including tips and techniques, the “inside scoop”).
