The APS Minority Outreach Fellowship provided funds for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to:

  • Attend the Experimental Biology meeting at the start of their fellowship year to learn about outreach techniques and activities as well as participating in the scientific meeting and Minority Travel Fellows Program;
  • Arrange and carry out two visits to minority student classrooms in the course of the year to do both career presentations and hands-on activities ;
  • Attend either the SACNAS National Conference or Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students to talk with undergraduate students at the APS exhibit and present the APS awards to undergraduate students for their physiology research work, and
  • Attend the Experimental Biology meeting at the end of their fellowship year to help conduct outreach activities for teachers and students as well as participating in the scientific meeting and Minority Travel Fellows Program..

Each award candidate was:

  • A current or past APS Minority Travel Fellow or Porter Physiology Development Fellow
  • An upper level graduate students (have passed preliminary exams or finished coursework) AND postdoctoral fellows
  • Conducting research within the 50 States and U.S. Territories

Awardees were a student or regular member of the APS or must be willing to join.
