Samuel M. Feldman

Samuel
M. Feldman, Professor Emeritus of Neural Science and Psychology at New York
University, died in New York on December 18th, 2006, aged 73. Feldman was
born September 26th, 1933, in Philadelphia. He received his Ph.D.
from McGill University in 1959, and then served on the faculty of Albert
Einstein College of Medicine from 1960-1971. He joined NYU in the Psychology
Department in 1971, and served as chair from 1972-1976. He joined the Center
for Neural Science in 1987, as one of its founding faculty members. He
served the Center with distinction in a variety of roles, most notably as
the creator of the Doctoral Program in Neural Science and then Director of
Graduate Studies for 17 years. Feldman had a productive research career,
publishing more than 60 papers and refereed abstracts. In recent years, he
became interested in the history of neuroscience, and had been preparing a
book and a monograph on the history of ideas on localization of function in
the brain. He was notable for his dedication to excellence in neuroscience
education and teaching. He is survived by his wife Lucy L. Brown, his sons
Lee and David Feldman, his daughters-in-law Chris Tokar and Theo Cohan, and
his grandchildren Julia, Violet, Elliot and Tess Feldman.
