GILMORE-Joseph 78 of Tarpon Springs, died 4/24/07. He is survived by his wife, Harriet of 56 years and his daughters, Dr. Cathleen (John) Diez, of Lutz, FL JoAnne (Tom) Grove, Omaha, NE, his sons, Dennis of Omaha, and Gerard, of Bloomfeld, CO; brothers, Daniel and Edward of Brooklyn, N.Y, and ten grandchildren. Dr. Gilmore was born in Brooklyn, NY and received his Ph.D degree from George Washington University while a research scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. In 1966 he accepted a position at the University of Virginia College of Medicine where he was acting head of the Dept of Pharmacology and Professor of Physiology. In 1970 he was appointed Chairman of the Dept of Physiology and Biophysics at the University or Nebraska College of Medicine, from which he retired in 1988 when he and Harriet moved to Tarpon Springs, FL.
Dr. Gilmore received a number of awards
including the McIntyre Award for excellence in research
and the University of Nebraska Award for Excellence in
Research and Creativity Activity The J P Gilmore
Distinguished Award was established at the University of
Nebraska to identify important research contributions of
young faculty-It is awarded annually at a formal
convocation. Dr. Gilmore was the author or co-author of
over 150
scientific papers and a number of scientific books. His
expertise was in the area of Heart and Kidney. He was a
Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a
member of numerous scientific societies including The
Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
and The American Heart Association.
