James J. Smith
January 28, 1914 - January 12, 2001

James J. Smith, 86, of  Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, died Friday of prostate cancer. he was a physician and an emeritus professor of physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Smith completed a book on the history of American medical schools a month before he dies, his son, Philip said. "He had written a book on how medical schools have changed and how they are doing thins better now," said Philip Smith, himself a physician in Omaha, Neb. "We will be trying to get that published now."

Smith was the author of two other books, on of which was a clinical physiology textbook written in 1980 designed to make the subject easier for medical students, Philip Smith said.

Smith also wrote more than 60 research papers and book chapters between 1953 and 1994.

"My father's hobby was really his work," Philip Smith said. "He loved working with his students."

Smith was a native of St. Paul, Minn., a 1932 graduate of teh University of Minnesota and a 1937 graduate of the St. Louis University School of Medicine. He also received advanced degrees from Northwestern University.

Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in a number of medical posts.

After the was, Smith was dean of the Loyola University School of Medicine from 1946 until 1950. He was then a professor at the George Washington University School of Physiology until he came to the Medical College in 1952.

With the exception of one year, he spen on sabbatical in Germany, Smith was at the Medical College until his death, his son said.

In addition to his son, Smith is survived by his daughter, Lucy Shaker of Chicago.
