A. Charles Bryan
January 23, 1928 - August 1, 2005
Dr. Bryan (Charlie, as he was known to generations of his research
fellows from around the world) was a Professor of Anesthesia and Pediatrics
at the University of Toronto, Hospital for Sick Children and long time
member of the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute. In 1991 he
became an Emeritus Professor in the Research Institute. His research was
internationally renowned in the world of physiology and respiration and he
achieved the rare distinction in 2003 of being honored with a Distinguished
Achievement Award from the American Thoracic Society as an “individual who
made outstanding contributions to the mission of the American Thoracic
Society”. He made important contributions in the area of neonatal
respiratory mechanics, particularly in the use of High Frequency Oscillation
in Neonatal and Pediatric Medicine which he took from being a unique
physiological insight to an important clinical innovation. Charlie said that
“I retired in 1991, but continued research as a hobby” and he did till the
end. He was born 1928 in Wales, UK.
