APS Membership Categories

The American Physiological Society has a variety of membership categories to accommodate all interest levels. Regular memberships are for individuals conducting original research in physiology. Affiliate memberships are for individuals interested in physiology but without the evidence of scholarly work. Student memberships are for all students engaged in physiological work at an institution. The privileges and benefits for each membership category vary.

Regular Membership

Regular membership in the APS is open to individuals who have conducted and published meritorious original research in physiology and are actively engaged in physiological work.

Dues $130 (members who are within five years of having received a doctoral degree may deduct 50% from their annual dues). Send no payment now. A dues statement will be sent on election to membership

1. Free online access to all 15 APS journals.

2. Free online access to the APS Journal Legacy Content (This legacy content is an "online package" of over 100 years of historical scientific research from APS's 14 research journals)

3. Free necessary color figures to Regular and Student Members who are first or last authors of papers published in any APS journal.

4. Free print subscription to The Physiologist, Physiology, and Advances in Physiology Education.

5. Over 50% discount on the other 12 APS print research journals.

6. Up to a 75% discount on APS scholarly books.

7. 20% subscription discount on Annual Reviews.

8. Interactive Legislative Action Center.

9. Register to attend scientific meetings of APS at member rates.

10. Receive The FASEB Journal at a discounted rate and have access to FASEB Online Membership Directory.

11. Hold elective office.

12. Vote at Society meetings.

13. Serve on APS committees and task forces and on the FASEB Board.

14. Serve as sponsor on membership applications.

15. Sponsor more than one contributed paper by a non-member at scientific meetings of the Society.

16. Participate in the FASEB's member life insurance program, disability program, and in-hospital protection plan if a resident of the United States, its territories, or possessions.

17. Eligible to apply for and be selected for Society awards.
 

Affiliate Membership

Affiliate membership in the APS is open to individuals who are interested in fostering the mission and aims of the Society but do not have evidence of scholarly work or publications in physiology, provided they are residents of The Americas.

Dues $85. Send no payment now. A dues statement will be sent on election to membership

1. Receive The Physiologist, Physiology and Advances in Physiology Education.

2. Have access to the FASEB Online Membership Directory.

3. Eligible to participate in FASEB's member life insurance program, disability program, and in-hospital protection plan if a resident of the United States, its territories, or possessions.
 

Student Membership

Student membership is open to all students actively engaged in physiological work at an institution as attested to by two Regular members of the Society. Undergraduate students must supply a letter from at least one sponsor attesting to the undergraduate or master program status of the applicant. The first year of Student membership is $10. Dues are $20 for the 2nd through 4th year. No individual may remain in this category for more than four years without reapplying.  Send no payment now. A dues statement will be sent upon approval of membership. 

Student members may:

1. Present one volunteered scientific paper at the scientific meetings of the Society with the endorsement of the student's advisor.

2. Free online access to the APS Journal Legacy Content (This legacy content is an "online package" of over 100 years of historical scientific research from APS's 14 research journals)

3. Receive three free journals: The Physiologist, Physiology and, Advances in Physiology Education.

4. Publish necessary color figures free if the student member is the first or last author on a paper published in any APS journal.

5. Subscribe to books and periodicals published by the Society at member rates.

6. Receive immediate online access to all APS journals.

7. Register to attend scientific meetings of APS at student rates.

Emeritus Membership

Emeritus membership is open to individuals who have reached the age of 65 and are retired from regular employment or have retired due to illness or disability. Members in this category receive all privileges and benefits of membership, except they may not vote or hold elected office. Emeritus members pay no membership fees.

1. Serve on selected Society committees (except Education, Finance, Membership, Joint Program, and Publications), boards, and task forces.

2. Free online access to the APS Journal Legacy Content (This legacy content is an "online package" of over 100 years of historical scientific research from APS's 14 research journals)

3. Have access to the FASEB Online Membership Directory.

4. Receive The Physiologist and Advances in Physiology Education.

5. Receive access to all APS Online journals.
 

Honorary Membership

Honorary membership is granted by Council to distinguished scientists of any country who have contributed to the advancement of physiology. Members in this category receive all privileges and benefits of membership, except they may not vote or hold elected office. Honorary members pay no membership fees. Honorary Membership Committee recommends nominations to Council.

1. Substitute for one regular member in sponsoring new members.

2. Serve on selected Society committees (except Education, Finance, Membership, Perkins, Joint Program, and Publication), boards, and task forces.

3. Receive The Physiologist, Physiology. Advances in Physiology Education.

4. Have access to the FASEB Online Membership Directory.

5. Receive access to all APS Online journals.
 

Sustaining Associate Membership (Organizations)

Sustaining Associate Membership is open to organizations who have an interest in the purposes of the APS and have been invited by the President, on approval of Council, to become members. Members in this category receive differing benefits depending on the category of sustaining associate membership chosen.

1. Be invited to a meeting with Council during the Society's spring meeting.

2. Designate representatives to serve on the Liaison with Industry Committee.

3. Designated representatives will receive Physiology, Advances in Physiology Education, and Call for Abstracts for the scientific meetings of the Society.

4. Select level of participation and benefits from four categories of membership.
 

Sustaining Associate Membership Categories - Category Level/Benefits

Bronze Level - $750

- Three member journals (The Physiologist, News in Physiological Sciences, Advances in Physiology Education)

- Member rates on all other publications

- Member registration rates at all APS Conferences and Meetings for all company employees

- Company description listed in The Physiologist once per year, and Corporate Membership listing every issue, and in all APS Conference Programs

- 25% Corporate Member discount on all advertising placed in APS publications

Election Process

Sponsorship:

Regular, Affiliate, or Student members must be nominated by two Regular members of the Society. If two APS members cannot be located for sponsorship signature, please send the application to APS, and we will be happy to find one (or both) for you.

Approvals:

Applications are reviewed and approved on a monthly basis. In general, an applicant will be notified within 6 weeks of receipt of application.
