Member Benefits
Membership in The American Physiological Society allows
individual scientists the opportunity to interact with other physiologists
world-wide in specific fields as well as in diverse fields all associated
with integrative biology through such varied activities as participation
in meetings and public affairs, involvement in education and award
programs, service on committees and in sections, and publications.

Meetings/Conferences
The American Physiological Society sponsors a number of scientific
meetings each year. Experimental Biology, the APS annual meeting, is
conducted jointly with other FASEB society members and focuses on the latest
advances in research science. It includes award lectureships, symposia,
exhibitions, and oral and poster presentations. In addition to this annual
meeting, small specialized APS Conferences are held throughout the year.
These conferences focus on designated areas of physiological research and
are funded by the Society.
Publications
The APS is an important publisher of journals and books on many
disciplines within physiology. It operates as a nonprofit publisher on a
self-supporting basis, independent of Society dues. The APS publications are
among the most respected and frequently cited in the world.
To keep members informed, the journal publishing program covers the
entire spectrum of physiology. These peer-reviewed journals examine major
physiological systems from the cellular and molecular to the organ and
system level. The APS journals meet the needs of research investigators,
educators, and information specialists interested in the physiological
sciences.
Free online access is provided to the entire collection of APS journals,
including their legacy content dating back to 1898. The APS publications include:
American Journal of Physiology (consolidated)
American Journal of Physiology: Cell Physiology
American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism
American Journal of Physiology: Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology
American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulatory Physiology
American Journal of Physiology: Lung Cellular and Molecular

American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative and
Comparative Physiology
American Journal of Physiology: Renal Physiology
Journal of Applied Physiology
Journal of Neurophysiology
Physiological Genomics

The Physiologist
All journals are available online as well as in print. Manuscripts are
published online within 7 days of acceptance in Articles in Press.
Public Affairs
The APS is actively involved with federal legislation and regulations
that affect physiological research. Society officers and members often
testify before Congress on appropriations and policy issues of interest to
Society members. Through its advocacy effort, the APS plays a significant
role in shaping federal policy on NIH funding and the use of animals in
research. The Society provides members with the most up-to-date information
on activities at all levels of government through publication in The
Physiologist.
Education
The APS conducts a variety of educational activities at all academic
levels. By continually developing new programs and strengthening those
programs already in existence, the Society works on building networks among
research scientists and teachers and encouraging the development of young
scientists. The APS refresher courses and teaching awards promote continued
excellence in education.
Awards
The APS offers a variety of awards and fellowships to members of
different ages in recognition of excellence and special accomplishments in
science. Applications for the various awards are available from the
Executive Office.
Committees/Sections
and Groups
The APS committees offer many opportunities for members to be involved in
Society activities. Members are surveyed yearly to encourage participation
on Society committees.
The APS sections and groups provide members with up-to-date information
in their specialty. These sections and groups advise the Society on matters
of interest to the specialty and assist the Society through representation
on the Committee on Committees, to identify qualified members to serve on
committees, and on the Program Advisory Committee, to organize the annual
meeting and APS Conferences.
