General Instructions

Check the box indicating the category of membership for which you are applying. Type the requested information on the application. Fill out all applicable spaces. Do NOT include a curriculum vitae or reprints.

The Publications should be submitted in the form found in the American Journal of Physiology.   These publications should consist of manuscripts that have been printed in peer-review journals. An example of the current form is:

Deadline Dates

Completed applications for Regular membership are considered for nomination by the Council and the Membership Committee, on a monthly basis. Affiliate and Student applications are accepted monthly upon approval of the Executive Director of the Society. Applications are not complete until all materials are received.

Qualifications for Regular Membership

The following categories are used when evaluating an application:

  1. Education. In general, applicants should  possess an advanced degree (Ph.D., D.V.M., M.D., etc.); however individuals who hold a masters degree will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Academic degree and postdoctoral training are evaluated with regard to how closely the applicant’s training has been tied to physiology.

  2. Occupation.  Emphasis is given to those applicants who have a position in a department of physiology or closely allied fields.  Consideration also is given to individuals with positions in clinical departments and to those functioning in commercial or government laboratories.  They should have a position in physiological research, teaching, administration, or related area.

  3. Contributions to Physiological Literature. The applicant's bibliography is evaluated on the basis of publications in major, refereed journals that are concerned with problems judged to be primarily physiologic in nature.

  4. Special Considerations. Acknowledge an applicant's unique accomplishments and scholarly contributions to physiology outside of research. The accomplishments should result from the applicant's talents, interests or background. In such instances, a sponsor should submit a letter reviewing any special considerations.

In general, persons who qualify for Regular membership will have a doctoral degree in physiology or related area and will have published at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal.

Qualifications for Affiliate Membership

In general, applicants will be considered for Affiliate membership if they have an interest in fostering the mission and aims of the Society, but do not have evidence of scholarly work in the physiological sciences.  Affiliate members may not subscribe to Society journals at discounted rates.

Qualifications for Graduate Student Membership

Graduate Student Membership is open to any student working toward a terminal degree in physiology or related field and who is actively engaged in physiological work. Applications for Graduate Student Membership require sponsorship by two Regular Members of the Society. Graduate Student Membership is limited to five years or upon receipt of the terminal degree, whichever is sooner.

Graduate Student Membership dues are $10 for the first year and $20 each subsequent year, not to exceed 5 years. Qualifications for Undergraduate Student Membership

Undergraduate Student Membership is open to any matriculated undergraduate student, as demonstrated by submission of verification of student status, who has an interest in physiology. Applications for Undergraduate Student Membership do not require sponsors however the applicant must provide proof of matriculation in an accredited degree program (either through the submission of student transcripts or letter from Registrar’s Office).
