Remodeling of Adult Tissues: Beneficial Adaptation, Disease and the Engineering of Reparative Medicine

Biomedical Engineering Society
Andrew McCulloch and Rakesh Jain
M. Simons, R. Jain, J. Hubbell and A. McCulloch

This session will explore how integration of the new knowledge of assembly events at both the molecular scale and multicellular scale (discussed in Sessions 1 and 2) is producing new understanding of beneficial remodeling in normal adaptations to environmental stresses, of disease states, and to harnessing of the adaptive processes for rational design of reparative medicine strategies.  Specific examples will include therapeutic angiogenesis in the heart (where multicell and multisignal approaches are now replacing single growth factor strategies), heart adaptation, neural repair after stroke, and skeletal tissue repair in ligament and cartilage.
