This symposium will focus on ethical issues arising in research,
beginning with a broad overview of common challenges that arise in the
course of conducting biomedical research.
Specific topics will include ethical issues related to:
-
Scientific misconduct and FFP (Falsification,
Fabrication, and Plagiarism) --definition, how to avoid it, how
to identify it, what your responsibilities are in terms of
reporting it
-
Record keeping and data ownership – length of time
data should be kept, is it possible for postdoctoral fellows to
take a project with them?
-
Authorship – what contributions merit authorship
-
Conflict of interest – how to recognize situations
that create conflict, how to manage COI
-
Ethical issues and the development of emerging
technologies – stem cell research, chimera technology
Discussion of each topic will include practical examples and case studies
that will be relevant to researchers at all levels from trainee to
experienced investigator.
