What Every Scientist Needs to Know about Ethical Issues in Biomedical Research
Sponsored by APS Public Affairs Committee
Career Development Track

Saturday, April 5 — 3:15 PM-5:15 PM
San Diego Convention Center — Room 25C

Chaired:

Jane Reckelhoff, Univ. of Mississippi Med. Ctr.

This symposium will focus on ethical issues arising in research, beginning with a broad overview of common challenges that arise in the course of conducting biomedical research.

Specific topics will include ethical issues related to:

  1. Scientific misconduct and FFP (Falsification, Fabrication, and Plagiarism) --definition, how to avoid it, how to identify it, what your responsibilities are in terms of reporting it

  2. Record keeping and data ownership – length of time data should be kept, is it possible for postdoctoral fellows to take a project with them?

  3. Authorship – what contributions merit authorship

  4. Conflict of interest – how to recognize situations that create conflict, how to manage COI

  5. Ethical issues and the development of emerging technologies – stem cell research,  chimera technology

Discussion of each topic will include practical examples and case studies that will be relevant to researchers at all levels from trainee to experienced investigator.
