The Lipid in Lipid Rafts: Lipids as Signaling Molecules

The old real estate saw that what's important is "Location, Location,
Location" also applies to cellular signaling. It has been clear for several
years that the local environment associated with lipid rafts determine
protein localization; but more recently, it has become clear that
over-and-above forming the structural basis for lipid rafts, the specialized
lipids in the rafts also are signaling molecules, themselves. This
symposium investigates the role of these lipids in regulating the formation
of lipid rafts and regulating the activity of proteins that are present in
rafts.
