Advances in Ion Channel Physiology
Sponsored by the APS Liaison with Industry
Committee

William J. Martin, Theravance, Inc. |
This symposium will feature presentations from
scientists working in industry. Presenters will highlight the development
and use of novel technologies and describe the ways in which these
approaches are advancing our understanding of ion channel function and
transforming the treatment of a variety of disease states. Dr. Krafte will
review the contribution of ion channels to the physiology and
pathophysiology of pain and will describe the therapeutic potential of
newly identified ion channel modulators. Dr. Fermini’s presentation will
review the role of ion channel in cardiac physiology from the perspective
of treating cardiac arrhythmias as well as improving the safety of novel
small molecule therapies. Dr. VanGoor will present work on the
identification of small molecules that modulate the kinetics or promote
proper folding and trafficking of channels with the most common mutations
for Cystic Fibrosis. Dr. Sher will speak on two new classes of nicotinic
allosteric potentiators that have recently discovered and characterized
which may have broad therapeutic utility across a range of indications.
