Living History of Physiology
John E. Greenleaf
John
Greenleaf holds three degrees from the University of Illinois. He earned a
bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1955 and earned his master’s and
doctoral degrees, both in physiology, in 1962 and 1963, respectively. He
also holds a master’s degree from New Mexico Highlands University in Las
Vegas.
Immediately upon earning his PhD, he took a position as research
physiologist at the NASA Ames Research Center near Stanford University,
where he established and directed the Laboratory for Human Environmental
Physiology in the Life Sciences Division. He was a prolific contributor to
scientific journals, especially in the areas of thirst and drinking, heat
acclimatization, bed rest, deconditioning, dehydration and space physiology.
He has received awards from the Aerospace Medicine Association, NASA, the
American College of Sports Medicine, and in 1998 was honored with the
distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Illinois Department of
Molecular and Integrative Physiology. Greenleaf retired from NASA in 2002.
Greenleaf has been a member of the American Physiological Society since 1970
and has been active participant in the activities and programs of the
Environmental and Exercise Physiology Section. He has also been an active
contributor to the Society’s journals, both as an author and a member of
editorial boards.
