125^th Anniversary Timeline of Physiology

One hundred and twenty five years ago, the American Physiological Society held its organizational meeting at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.  On May 23, 1887, S. Weir Mitchell, Henry Newell Martin, and Henry Pickering Bowditch sent a letter to physiologists proposing the formation of a physiological society and subsequent participation in the Congress to be held in Washington, D. C.  On December 30, 1887, seventeen physiologists met at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University to organize the society.  At the time of its founding, those in attendance elected Bowditch to serve as the Society’s President and Martin as Secretary-Treasurer. 

In recognition of the Society’s 125^th anniversary, APS has created a 125^th Anniversary Timeline highlighting physiology’s many contributions and placing them in the context of national and international events.  The Timeline was created with the assistance of the APS membership and staff.  We recognize that many contributions were probably missed in our efforts to create the Timeline and apologize in advance to any and all who feel that their work was slighted by not being included. 

The Timeline was displayed as 14 panels during the Society’s 125^th Anniversary meeting and is available as individual panels for viewing.
