Presidential Award for Excellence
in Science, Mathematics, and
Engineering Mentoring

On May 6, 2004 the APS received the 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). The PAESMEM Program seeks to identify outstanding mentoring efforts that enhance the participation of groups (i.e., women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The awardees serve as leaders in the national effort to develop fully the Nation's human resources in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The APS nomination described the work of the APS as an established professional society that has worked since the 1960s to increase the diversity of scientists in its field and continues to seek opportunities to contribute not only through its own activities, but also by providing models for use by other organizations in three main areas:
Monitoring the progress of minority students and professionals in their field;
Creating a supportive climate in society-sponsored meetings and programs; and
Creating targeted programs for minority students that address critical impact points in their professional development.

Most importantly, the APS activities model a long-term commitment of the Society to strongly addressing diversity issues within each APS educational program. Each initiative launched is:
Developed with consideration of how to attract diverse applicants to the program;
Formatively evaluated to determine whether diverse applicants are applying for and successfully gaining entrance to the program or activity; and
Summatively evaluated to determine the impact of the program on all participants with a special focus on diversity issues; and
Further developed to build viable connections between and among the individual efforts to promote networking and collaboration among students, researchers, mentors, and educators at different educational levels.

Information provided at this website and the APS Minority Programs website share some of the strategies and resources that have proven useful in the Society’s efforts to increase the diversity of the physiology community.
