Grade Level: High School
Subject:
Microbiology

This activity is designed for high school students. I have a program that prepares students for entry-level health occupations, but it would be appropriate for biology, AP biology, microbiology or anatomy and physiology, as well. I use this activity as a part of a unit on the immune system and the importance of controlling microorganisms in the human environment. This activity expands on similar “germ finding” activities by requiring students to ask questions, develop a hypothesis, design experiments and report results based on their findings. These results may support or refute the “popular wisdom” surrounding such topics as hand-washing and surface cleaning.
