"APS’s Frontiers in Physiology program has had an enormous impact on the way that I view the nature of science and therefore has dramatically changed the way that I teach science. Through the summer research program, I was able to participate in true scientific research which led me to a better understanding of the work of scientists. I learned how the continual search for answers leads them to investigations that are meaningful and challenging. My new understanding of science was then passed on to my students by providing them with the opportunity to conduct meaningful investigations of their own.
APS has also taught me the true nature of inquiry based learning and how to utilize sound pedagogy in my classroom as well as how to write curriculum that reflects my new understanding of science and the principles put forth in the National Science Education Standards. APS' Frontiers in Physiology program has truly had a positive impact on my teaching and therefore on students as well!"

"The APS Frontiers in Physiology program promised to provide me with an opportunity to participate in genuine scientific research for a summer, but I had no idea how profoundly this program and my association with APS would impact my teaching. I did experience first-hand scientific research, from grant writing to recruiting subjects, calibrating equipment, determining experimental protocol, to publishing the whole project.
But my experience has gone far beyond this research component. Through Frontiers, I was introduced to teaching science through inquiry; the summer retreat provided me with the skills, confidence, practice and sample activities to bring home and implement inquiry and other new and powerful strategies immediately in my classroom. In fact, as a result of my APS experience, I was inspired to create an honors level anatomy and physiology course at my high school that uses many inquiry-based and other activities provided by APS. This course quickly became (and still is) a favorite of students; it fills at least half of my teaching assignment.
Furthermore, working with APS has given me experience and some expertise at curriculum writing, including developing online curriculum through the CD-SRT program. I have also had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with a number of motivated and innovative science teachers who are also SRTs, as well as become a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT); both of which provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and activities, something all teachers crave but cannot find. In my opinion, the APS programs for teachers are the BEST opportunity science teachers have for professional growth and inspiration!"
