Betta Splendens Lab
This unit investigates agonistic and reproductive behavior in the Betta splendens fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish. The activities emphasize careful animal behavior observation techniques and how to design an experiment to determine the sign stimulus for a particular animal behavior. As a result, students will be able to explain the adaptive advantage of an animal behavior.
Neural Networks
This unit covers aspects of neurophysiology and neural responses that are important to the functioning of many body systems. It is designed to provide students with a scientific basis for understanding "reflexes," especially why reflexes are special types of responses and how they can/cannot be modified.
Physiology of Fitness
This high school unit covers aspects of cardiovascular and respiratory physiology important in exercise and fitness. It is designed to provide students with a scientific basis for understanding “fitness” - especially why it varies among individuals and how to improve their own fitness
Physiology of Exercise
This middle school unit covers aspects of cardiovascular and respiratory physiology important in exercise and fitness. It is designed to provide students with a scientific basis for understanding “fitness” - especially why it varies among individuals and how to improve their own fitness
Color Your World
In this unit, students explore both the history of dyes and how they can dye objects themselves. Using online and classroom resources students learn about natural dyes, the science of dyeing, and the use of natural dyes in Native American art.
Organic Foods Controversy
In this unit, students evaluate two sides of a scientific controversy. Students look critically at information found on the web as well as design and conduct their own experiments to answer the question of whether there is a difference in the amount of E.coli in organically grown produce compared to conventionally grown produce.
Sense of Touch
A guided inquiry unit that enables students to explore their sense of touch. The students learn about adaptation rates of skin tactile receptors, the sensitivity of these receptors using a two-point discrimination test, and diseases that can affect the sensory system.
It’s a Matter of Taste
In this unit, students explore the sense of taste from the perspective of both anatomy and physiology. The unit utilizes online content resources, hands-on laboratory activities and interactive online student activities.
