Constructing Good Exam Items

To learn how to construct good exam items, see the National Board of Medical Examiners page.

Institutions that have faculty who have participated in or held exam-writing workshops:
East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine
Robert G. Carroll

Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans

Michael G. Levitzky

Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine
The LCME has given several workshops over the past 6-8 years at the College of Medicine focusing on good question writing. Example books are also available as are examples of “best practices.” We have “toyed” with the idea of having lunch-time meetings (once every 2 weeks) where the instructors would get together and write USMLE-type questions as a group - so far this has not been implemented.
