The NBME exam is not used anywhere in the first-year medical school curriculum at the PSU College of Medicine. However, the comprehensive basic science shelf exam is given at the end of the 2nd year in preparation for USMLE Part 1.

Correction of the "calibration error" on the shelf exams we used last summer and this spring resulted
in 52 grade changes, most from this spring. It also reduced our 2004 summer remediation enrollment from 29 to 6; and, I'm happy to report that those 6 were successful in their remediation. Although the 23
students who had started the remediation program prior to our receiving the correct NBME scores were delighted when we first told them, I know a few who now are not happy with the fact that they had needlessly changed their summer plans to start the remediation program. So, I don't know if any of them are going to seek compensation. I do know that the six students who needlessly repeated the first year due to incorrect NBME scores are seeking compensation. So far, the Board has admitted their error and seem to want to settle with the students out of court, but we'll see.
One interesting thing is coming up which I do not understand. Although the board folks have not given us the data, they have implied that we were the only school to have students fail and/or repeat a year
when the wrong scores were used. I find this hard to believe because an 8 point swing on a final exam should have quite an impact. According to the board, 43 schools were affected, but I think I
received information from only about a dozen.
