Local Site Teams
As part of the Frontiers in Physiology program, the APS has established four Local Site Teams (LST) that provide regional science educators with professional development opportunities using APS resources.
The four LSTs are housed at:
Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN
University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Vermillion, SD
University of Louisville Health Sciences Center, Louisville, KY
University of Alabama School of Medicine, Birmingham, AL
is a program of the American Physiological Society, and is sponsored by the APS, the National Center for Research Resources, Science Education Partnership Awards (SEPA Grant #RR15251), and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK Grant #DK39306) at the National Institutes of Health.
APS Local Site Teams

APS Local Site Teams (LSTs) function as the grassroots arm of the national Frontiers in Physiology program. LSTs disseminate Frontiers materials and resources to elementary, middle, and high school science teachers via in-service workshops and build connections between physiology researchers and departments and local teachers and schools. Each LST includes: research physiologists; local K-12 teachers; and, often, representatives from the local school system.

LSTs offer workshops using APS Learning Cycle Units, online Project WISE materials, and My Health, My World materials.

LST Activities include:

  • Developing a local team involving current and past APS Research Teacher Fellows, biomedical and clinical researchers, and other teachers and/or school personnel from the community.
  • Participating in LST Training Workshop so that all team members know how to implement Learning Cycle unit, Project WISE, and My Health, My World workshops.
  • Planning and conducting professional development workshops for local teachers using the materials listed above.
  • Planning and conducting similar workshops and presentation at the state science teachers association meeting and the National Association of Biology Teachers meeting.
  • Participating in the ongoing evaluation of the LST model.
