As part of its extensive outreach programs, the APS coordinates workshops for science educators within the geographical area of the Experimental Biology meeting. This year, Experimental Biology convenes in New Orleans, LA.

 Who may attend?

High school life science teachers and up to four of their students

 FREE 

Workshop!

This is a FREE workshop. There is no registration fee, although pre-registration is required. A free boxed lunch and drink will be provided for each teacher and student attending. Attendees are responsible for transportation costs they may incur, including parking in the hotel area.

 Registration Deadline

Registration is limited. Participants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. You can register online (preferred) or by fax. Print out the Registration Form  <pdf> and fax to 301-634-7098.

The APS supports a variety of education activities from grades K-12, to undergraduate and graduate, as well as continuing education for faculty. 

 

At the K-12 level, activities focus on building professional networks between research scientists and classroom teachers. The APS Education Office distributes various education resources including brochures, books, videos, and CD-ROMs. Information available covers careers in physiology, women life scientists, effective teaching practices, and hands-on, inquiry-based laboratory activities.

Sled dogs are nature’s premier endurance athletes, capable of running hundreds of miles in some of the most severe conditions imaginable. Dr. Davis and his team of scientists have begun to unlock the secrets of their ability, and he will share some of the findings, challenges, and fascinating features of sled dogs and sled dog research.

Teacher In-service Workshop

Junkyard Digestion: Design, build, and test a small-scale model of the digestive tract that will process food and produce an end-product. An inquiry activity that really works! Session includes information on APS fellowship programs and a free book of labs developed by Fellowship Teachers that infuse inquiry, address equity, integrate technology and address science standards. Facilitated by the 2008 Research Teacher Fellows

Student Workshop

Physiology of Fitness: Hands-on Physiology Activity
A team of physiologists will lead your students in an inquiry-based, hands-on exploration of factors that affect blood flow and blood pressure.
