The APS supports a variety of education activities from grades K-12, to undergraduate and graduate, as well as continuing education for faculty.

At the K-12 level, activities focus on building professional networks between research scientists and classroom teachers. The APS Education Office distributes various education resources including brochures, books, videos, and CD-ROM. Information available covers careers in physiology, women life scientists, effective teaching practices, and hands-on, inquiry-based laboratory activities.

Why Fat is Good: The Physiological Consequences of Obesity in Mammalian Hibernators

Gregory L. Florant, Ph.D.
Professor,
Dept of Biology
Colorado State University
Fort Collins, CO

Dr. Florant studies yellow-bellied marmots, the largest North American rodent hibernator, and the mechanisms they use to regulate energy stores. Dr. Florant investigates how these animals get fat and use that fat to survive under harsh conditions. In this lively presentation, Dr. Florant discusses how research can help us understand obesity in humans.
