Public Affairs Committee
(Established April 1980, revised 10/25/07)
This committee is composed of at least six members. The chairperson
serves a four-year term plus another four years as past chairperson. The
chairperson normally serves as the Society's representative on the FASEB
Science Policy Committee during the last two years as chairperson and first
two years as past chairperson. The past chairperson, FASEB Board
Representative, a member of the Liaison with Industry Committee, the
chairperson of the Animal Care and Experimentation Committee, and the
Society's Director of Government Relations and Science Policy are ex officio
members of the Committee, without vote.
Duties are to:

Deal with all matters pertaining to public affairs that
affect physiologists, such as biomedical research funding, scientific
misconduct, ethics, etc. Bring such matters to the attention of Council
and act on Council recommendations.

Coordinate activities with those of the FASEB Science
Policy Committee and the FASEB Board.

The chairperson shall serve as an ex officio member of the
Council and Animal Care and Experimentation Committee, without vote.

Be responsible for identifying and monitoring legislation
and regulations pertaining to biomedical research being considered or
proposed by state, county, or local governmental agencies within the
member's state; and, for keeping the Society informed of these actions
and subsequent developments.

Report to the Society all issues of significance to
physiologists.

Seek the support of the Society whenever warranted to
assist in matters relating to legislative and regulatory proposals
affecting physiologists.

The Chairperson shall report to Council on a regular basis
to provide in-depth information on an upcoming issue(s) and receive
input from Council. The Chairperson shall hold discussions with the
Executive Cabinet between scheduled Council discussions on an as-needed
basis.

Submit the report of Public Affairs Committee activities
for publication in The Physiologist.
