(Established July 2001)

This Committee is composed of eight or more regular members of the Society, plus a trainee member. The Society’s Communications Director, Director of Government Relations and Science Policy, and Director of Publications are ex-officio members of the Communications Committee,
without vote. Council and the Trainee Advisory Committee will each designate one of its members to serve as a liaison to the Committee.

Duties of the Communications Committee are to:

  1. Provide direction, set priorities, and devise strategies for the promotion of the physiological sciences, the Society, and the Society’s interests and activities.

  2. Make recommendations on new opportunities and technologies to enhance internal and external communications.

  3. Work with the Communications Office and other APS staff to develop methods for timely identification of APS journal articles, elements of APS meetings and conferences, APS awards, and other Society activities that are appropriate for promotion to the public.

  4. Advise on the integrity of the scientific content embedded in all communications efforts.

  5. Evaluate applications for the AAAS Mass Media Fellowship.

  6. Organize, when appropriate, a symposium at the annual Experimental Biology meeting on communications strategies or mechanisms that would be of interest to members of APS and other FASEB societies.

  7. Review the APS communications program annually and provide appropriate recommendations to Council.
