(Established 1952)

This committee is composed of three or more members of the Society and a student member. The Chairperson of the Public Affairs Committee, a member of the Liaison with Industry Committee, and the Society's Director of Government Relations and Science Policy are ex officio members, without vote.

Duties are to:

  • Keep the "Guiding Principles of the Care and Use of Animals" up-to-date. Changes must be approved by Council.

  • Act as arbiter for the Publications Committee relative to publication of papers involving questionable animal experimental procedures and care.

  • Keep abreast of legislation as well as the activities of other groups concerning animal care and experimentation and keep Council apprised of changes by means of regular reports.

  • Keep abreast of new developments in animal models for student teaching and alternatives for animal usage and make recommendations to Council concerning these matters.

  • Coordinate with the Public Affairs Committee all matters and policies related to the procurement, use and care of animals for research and teaching; activities involving public or private agencies concerned with such matters; and advise the Council of actions to be taken or recommended. To facilitate this coordination, the chairperson of the Animal Care and Experimentation Committee shall serve as an ex officio member of the Public Affairs Committee. The coordination of these activities is the responsibility of the public affairs officer who also serves as liaison for both committees.

  • Discharge any other duties relative to animal experimentation that may be delegated by Council.

  • The Chairperson or a member of the committee shall represent the APS on the AAALAC Board of Trustees for a three-year term and may be appointed for an additional three-year term.

  • Update the Sourcebook for the Use of Animals in Physiological Research and Teaching.
