b. Goals of OSP
What are the goals of OSP? Monetary awards, participation of
small colleges.
Sinya Benyajati asked about fraction of membership from
major universities. Jim Blankemeyer said that most of members are OU, OSU.
Suggestions were made by Bruce Benjamin, comments from Kennon Garret and
Bruce Benjamin that direct contact and searching Web pages would yield more
members. Ken Dormer said that an outcomes assessment of the original goals
were to increase interactions. Based on that we have flunked. Sinya
Benyajati suggested that some of the problem is lack of communication. Ken
suggested that the leadership should be for three years rather than one
year. Ken Dormer said original goal was to synergize physiology. Jay Farber
mentioned goal was to reach out to smaller schools. Also Jay Farbermentioned
that students from smaller schools could present here.
A Midwinter planning meeting was suggested. (This will
happen Tulsa in November-December 1998 JTB)

physiologists rather than the medical physiologists who made up the original
organization.

Misty McWilliams mentioned that many people don't know about
OSP. Ken Dormer mentioned mission statement "increase synergy of
physiologists in the state".
Al Rouch mentioned setting a goal of 20% increase in active
members.
Ken Dormer made a motion that we have 99 members in 99.
Seconded by Bruce. voted unaminously.
c. Status of monetary awards
Three awards:
(1)Curt Weiss high school high school student OJAS
(2)Grad student presentation award (next year?) min 4
presenters
(3)high school physiology (in abeyance)
4. Status of APS Chapter application
We do have chapter status as of August 1, 1997. Ken made
motion that outgoing president Kirk Barron get the money ($500 see below)
seconded by AL. Sinya Benyajati suggested that use email that use email to
get nominations for speaker next year so we can go to APS and get $1000 for
speaker. Ken suggested that president attend OJAS award and pick best paper
and invite him/her and teacher to next years OSP meeting. Next year put in
graduate student award. Jay Farber nominated Bruce Benjamin seconded by
Sinya Benyajati. Since there were no other nominations, Bruce was elected by
acclamation. Gerry Johnson suggested that next year's meeting be before
FASEB . Jay Farber mentioned that this would exclude may high school
teachers and college teachers. Kennon Garret suggested using the OSP
speaker's bureau to build awareness of OSP. Ken suggested that J.T.
Blankemeyer request information from members to build the web page; also
Sinya Benyajati suggested that we contact APS about web page. Misty
McWilliams suggested that award include membership dues.
5. Election of President-Elect
Discussed money available from APS national: $500 for
strengthening chapter and $1000/yr for APS lectureship.

Jerry Hurst passed away in 1998
