Attendees: Participants at Twentieth Annual
OSP Meeting
Dr. Warren Finn, OSP president, called the
meeting to order at 12:45 p.m. on June 1, 2001.
Dr. Finn welcomed the members to the
business meeting. He recognized the two student speakers, Connie Hébert and
Steve Sands, and thank them for their oral presentations.
Dr. Finn and all OSP members expressed
gratitude to Guy Tatum and his staff Tulsa Technology Center for the
excellent presentation and tour of the Aerospace center which is a new
state-of-the art facility. The meeting turned out to be a real treat for
members and everyone agreed to hold future meetings here.
Dr. Finn spoke about significance of the OSP
commended everyone on the fact that OSP has survived for 20 years. He
mentioned how research in general has changed in the last 20 years and how
Oklahoma researchers have adapted. Dr. Finn also stated that OSP has and
continues to serve the need for Oklahoma physiologists to communicate on
issues related to research and education and for encouraging students in
Oklahoma to pursue to careers in physiology and the biomedical sciences.
Everyone present agreed with Dr. Finn of the importance of maintaining the
society, increasing membership, and strengthening the society to provide
services to students, educators, and researchers around the state of
Oklahoma.
Dr. Finn then asked for the Treasurer’s
report.
Dr. Rouch, OSP secretary/treasurer presented
the report below. Dr. Rouch reported that this time last year the society
had $1,772.65 and now it has $1,603.35. Expenses included money for the
student award and keynote speaker for last year’s meeting. Estimated income
from annual dues is $150. Dr. Rouch mentioned that efforts are in place to
obtain tax-exempt status for OSP. He also informed members that a fall
newsletter will be sent in October or November.
Dr. Finn then told members about the next
meeting to be held at the Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.
Dr. Robert Foreman will be the new OSP president.
Members voted for Dr. Randy Wymore to be the
President-elect. The meeting in June, 2002 will be held at Tulsa
University.
Ideas on how to increase membership and
awareness of the society were discussed. Helen Kodish suggested that OSP be
represented at the next Oklahoma Education Association meeting where state
educators at levels will be assembled. Helen mentioned that a list of
science teachers in the state of Oklahoma can be obtained from the State
department. Helen suggested that OSP could have a booth at the meeting to
advertise the society. Connie Hébert suggested that we make tear-away OSP
membership cards for people to fill out similar to the ones APS uses. Dr.
Barbara Shirley suggested the OU Medical school in Tulsa be contacted and
informed about the society. Dr. Shirley also suggested that effort to
recruit potential graduate students by sending flyers to undergraduate
schools around the state.
Dr. Finn and Dr. Rouch will discuss these
and other suggestions and relay them to members in future correspondence.
There being no further business, Dr. Finn
adjourned the meeting at 2:15 p.m.
