It is our pleasure to invite you to the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Midwest Physiological Societies on Monday and Tuesday, June 7th and 8th, 1999! We hope that you, your colleagues, and your students will have a stimulating time at the meeting, and find time to enjoy the many sights and attractions of Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The purpose of this meeting is to promote interactions among Midwest physiologists in an informal setting that will encourage scientific exchange. Another important purpose of the meeting is to provide a research forum for young investigators. We especially extend an invitation to undergraduate students to participate in the meeting. This year's meeting will focus on three main themes: cardiac muscle, cardiopulmonary regulation and systemic and integrative physiology. The Symposium will feature three keynote speakers, Drs. Marc Kaufman, James Skatrud, and John Solaro.

Presentations and discussions will encompass the molecular, cell, organ, and whole animal levels. There will be three half-day sessions, each led by a key-note speaker followed by traditional 15 minute oral free communications. In addition, a poster session will be held on the first day of the symposium. After the meeting, in the afternoon, a golf outing is planned for those wishing to participate.

Program Costs

The registration cost is $80 for faculty and $45 for trainees. A paid registration includes program materials, abstracts, 2 continental breakfasts and 2 box lunches.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel. Please call them directly at (608)251-5511 to make reservations (single: $78.00/night; double: $88.00/night). After May 6th the rooms will be released to the general public. Reduced cost housing is also available at the UW Lakeshore Dormitories. Please call (608) 262-2545 or (608)262-2270 to make accommodation arrangements at the dorms. For dorm and hotel reservations, please inform them that you are attending the Midwest Physiology meeting. Free overnight parking is available at Howard Johnsons but will need to be arranged if you choose to stay in the dorms. Abstract Guidelines

Submission and Deadlines:
Abstracts (2 copies) must be prepared using the enclosed abstract reproduction forms and be sent to the Dept. of Comparative Biosciences, Attn: Kathi Worachek, 2015 Linden Drive West, Madison, Wisconsin, 53706. Abstracts must be submitted no later than April 30, 1999. Only submissions using the official abstract form (or photocopies of the original form) will be accepted. Abstracts must be accompanied by the completed registration form and registration fee.

Abstract selection:
The Program Committee will select abstracts for oral presentation. Preference will be given to trainees and there will be a broad interpretation of the session themes. Submitted abstracts not selected for oral presentation will be assigned to poster sessions.

Posters should not exceed 4' width x 5'.

Several financial awards will be given to outstanding oral and poster presentations given by trainees.

Directions

Interstates 90 and 94 converge on Madison's east side, making Madison an easy drive from Milwaukee (90 minutes via I-94), Chicago (2.5 hours vis I-90 or I-94) or Minneapolis/St. Paul (4.5 hours via I-94).

US 12 and 18 combine to form a beltway around Madison's south and west sides. From the south Beltline, the UW campus is a few miles north on Park Street.

The UW Memorial Union is at the corner of Langdon St. and Park St. on the shores of Lake Mendota.

From the west side of town, take University Ave. to the east. University Ave. east-bound becomes Campus Drive and then Johnson St. Turn left (north) on Park St. from Johnson St.
