Relationship of Iowa Physiological Society (IPS)
to Iowa Academy of Science (IAS)
Physiology is one of the sciences with which the Iowa Academy of Science
has had a long association. W. D. Middleton, then Chair of Physiology at The
University of Iowa, was among the ten founding members of the Academy at its
organizational meeting in Iowa City on August 27, 1875 (Proceedings of
The Iowa Academy of Science 82:1, 2-32, March 1975). The IAS Physiology
Section is one of the Academy's 17 Sections. This Section was founded in
1970 by Irving Fishman of Grinnell College.
When IPS was founded in 1995, its organizers felt that the cause of
Physiology in Iowa could best be served by joining forces with the Academy.
The IPS Scientific Meetings have all been scheduled in conjunction with the
IAS Physiology Section. That section and IPS enjoy overlapping membership
and officers. The current IPS Past-President, President, and President-Elect
were all elected to corresponding positions in the IAS Physiology Section.
Our registration and abstract submission are presently handled as part of
the Academy's program. This takes advantage of the Academy's facility for
organization of scientific meetings. It also permits close interdisciplinary
contact with researchers and teachers throughout Iowa. The Academy's large
enrollment of precollege and undergraduate teachers permits early contact
with potential physiologists. This also avails our expertise to those Iowa
teachers. Membership in IAS is open to anyone interested in science, with
any of the IAS Members eligible to join its Physiology Section.
*** Participants at an IPS meeting are required to register by
registering for the IAS meeting. IPS members are encouraged but not required
to become IAS members.
