Report of Iowa Physiological Society 2000 Board Meeting

The Iowa Physiological Society (IPS) Board met on Sunday, November 5, 2000 from 3:30 until 5:00 PM at the home of Chuck Wunder, Iowa City, Iowa. As was the case for the past two years, this location was chosen due to ready accessability via I-80. IPS officers president were Piper Wall (Prsident), Luke Mortensen (Past President), Tom Schmidt (President Elect) and Chuck Wunder (Executive Secretary). Mark Chapleau (Treasurer) was unable to attend but provided a report via E-mail to all Board Members. We were fortunate to have as guests two officers of the Iowa Academy of Science (IAS) -- Dave McCalley (IAS Executive Director) and Lynn Brant (IAS President-Elect) as well as Jerry Dibona (APS President).

OLD BUSINESS included review of the April 2000 Meeting, Treasure's Report (via E-mail), Membership Report, and Report of IAS September 2000 Section Chairs Meeting. For a formal report of the April 21-22, 2000 Meeting in Des Moines, we were referred to Luke Mortensen's Annual Meeting Report as Printed in THE PHYSIOLOGIST and on web (http://www.the-aps.org/chapters/iowa/fifthmeet.htm 2000 Annual Meeting Report). Chapleau reported a balance of $1058.61 in the treasury as of October 17, 2000. Wunder reported that the roster of active regular members (http://www.the-aps.org/chapters/iowa/member.htm) will be shortened to 27 after declaring the five who have not paid dues since 1997 to be on inactive status that can be reactivated by payment of all dues that are in arrears. Student membership will be shortened to 6 after those who failed to indicate continued interest are dropped. In a discussion that followed it was suggested that even though there are no IPS dues for student members, their participation could be encouraged by reducing other expenses. Wunder reported that although the IPS web page which is provided for us by APS was updated in August, he is discouraged at the disappearance of sections from the web page in a manner which leaves innumerable "dangling links". He was reminded that current revisions in the APS web procedures may eventually correct that problem. As the IPS President currently also serves as Chair of the IAS section (Physiology) which meets with us in April, Wall's report of the IAS September 2000 Section Chairs Meeting was basic to plans she presented for our April 2000 meeting. 

NEW BUSINESS centered on the April 2001 meeting. New business also concerned the related matter of nominations for the 2001-02 President and President Elect, and selection of our 2001 APS Keynote Lecturer, Call for Papers, and the Annual Saturday Noon Buffet. As with past meetings, the April 20-21, 2001 Meeting will be held jointly with the IAS Physiology Section under the IAS umbrella at the Hotel Fort Des Moines, Des Moines, Iowa. As there will be no conflict with Passover, Easter, or the Experimental Biology Meetings (31-April 4, 2001), the 2001 meeting should permit better timing than in 2000. If we continue to meet with IAS, our meetings will continue to be held at the Fort Des Moines Hotel in Des Moines throughout the foreseeable future.

At the April 20- 21, 2001 Meeting, there will be election of the 2000-01 President and of the President Elect who will become the 2001-02 IAS President. Assuming that sabbatical leave will interfere with his presiding as President at the 2002 Meeting, Thomas Schmidt will resign and be nominated by the Board as 2001-02 President Elect to preside at the 2003 Meeting. Ronald Torry from Drake University will be the Board's nominee for 2001-02 IPS President Elect as well as for 2001-02 IAS Section Chair.

We considered several individuals to be invited to give our APS Keynote Lecturer at the 2001 meeting. Dr Irving Zucker of University of Nebraska Medical Center accepted our invitation to present this lecture. 

A CALL FOR PAPERS with a January 31, 2001 deadline for abstract submission, for the combined IPS-IAS Physiology Section Meeting next April was prepared by Wall. This Call was distributed by mail to IAS Physiology Section Members a few days after our Board Meeting. Following the meeting, an updated version of this call together with other matters was to be E-mailed to IPS members and other physiologists throughout Iowa.Distribution of this updated Call occurred on December 31, 2000 together with announcement of an arrangement with the Academy to permit a lower registration fee for IPS Student Members. All of the IPS abstracts will be processed by the Academy along with abstracts for all other sessions at the IAS Meeting. For the first time, however, abstracts (particularly those from students applying for the special registration fee) can be submitted to IPS for forwarding to IAS. Within the near future, we will place more emphasis upon making similar announcements by E-mail than by use of our web site.

PLANS FOR THE SATURDAY NOON FREE BUFFET at our April Meeting are incomplete. Until 2000, this has been considered an essential part of our meetings but meeting in a hotel has complicated the possibility of having a free "carry-in" banquet. Arrangements for us to participate in the IAS Saturday Buffet at discounted rates are still in negotiation.
