The APS Mentoring Forum will feature a new topic every other month. A member of the Women in Physiology Committee or invited guest will write about a general issue involving mentoring. That issue will then be the focus of the Mentoring Forum for 2 months. Mentees will be able to anonymously ask topic-specific questions of Committee members and other mentors and of other mentees. A potential list of topics include:

  • Finding a mentor
  • What is a career like in
    • Industry
    • Research institutions
    • Clinical research
    • Undergraduate teaching institutions
  • Career training
  • Differences in mentor expectations for a graduate student vs. postdoc
  • Finding teaching experiences during a postdoc
  • Preparing a job talk
  • Getting a job in the same town as a spouse / significant other
  • Sharing childcare in a marriage with two professionals
  • Starting a laboratory
    • buying equipment
    • establishing techniques in the laboratory
  • Teaching that first course
  • Career transitions

If there are specific topics you’d like to see addressed sooner than later or topics that are not on this list, please contact us with your suggestions.
