Presentation Skills

 

During your career (no matter what career you chose) you will at some point need to make a presentation. As a scientist, you will make many different types of presentations from those at a scientific meeting to the classroom to the local school kids.

The APS and the Association of Chairs of Departments of Physiology recommend that trainees understand the importance of and work to develop the following skills:

  1. Ability to organize ideas in a useful fashion
  2. Ability to use graphics effectively to communicate ideas
  3. Knowledge of how to develop poster presentations
  4. Knowledge of how to develop various types of oral presentations
  5. Ability to convey complex information in appropriate fashion to audiences with different levels of physiology knowledge
  6. Ability to speak before large and small groups
  7. Ability to assess audience response to determine how well ideas are being conveyed
  8. Ability to make persuasive arguments in oral presentations
  9. Ability to handle audience questions
  10. Ability to speak clearly in English
