Navigating the Interview:
How to Make It Work for You

 (Sponsored by APS Career Opportunities
in Physiology  Committee)

Experimental Biology 2006
San Francisco, CA

Date: Monday, April 3, 5:45-7:45 PM
Location: Convention Center, Rm. 252/260

The Interview is the great equalizer!  No matter how high your GPA, where you received your degree, who you studied with or how much or what experience you have---if you are not able to interview successfully, you’re not likely to get the job!

The skills and abilities to successfully navigate the interview process don’t come naturally and the unfamiliarity of most candidates with the process adds to the stress and the likelihood of making a mistake which could cost you the job.

The purpose of this symposium is to provide potential interviewees with information about what to expect in the interview, the etiquette of interviewing and possible pitfalls to be aware of in the interview process. The program will focus on how to prepare for an interview, the similarities and differences between industrial and academic hiring processes and the skill sets desired by industrial and academic employers.

Attendees will hear from individuals who have been involved in hiring for academic and industrial institutions, an individual familiar with the differences between industry and academia and recent successful job applicants. Following brief presentations by the speakers, time will be dedicated to an open roundtable discussion of questions raised by the attendees.
