How to Finance Graduate/Professional School

The little matter of money

The Bad News: depending on the university and program, graduate/professional schools can cost you a great deal of money before you end up with that degree.

The Good News: Most students earning degrees in science or engineering receive substantial, often complete, support for their graduate studies.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
There are many types of financial aid and scholarships that are available to graduate/professional program students. Here are some web sites that can give you more information:*

University Financial Aid Office
Don’t forget to contact the Financial Aid Office of the university you’re considering to find out what other grants/scholarships might be available at that particular institution.

Departmental Research and Teaching Assistantships
Also, contact the department to find out whether there are research or teaching assistantships available. Many departments reserve these for the graduate students. These usually come with a tuition waiver or reduction and you get a paycheck!
