Becoming Involved in Your Society
There are many ways to become involved in the Society. There are many ways to become involved in the Society. Committees
Committees
The Trainee Advisory Committee is completely composed of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Committee membership is by sectional representation. Sectional representatives for this committee are selected by each section. Many committees have graduate student members. See each committee listing for those that do encourage student members. Any APS member wishing to be a candidate for a committee position needs to submit a Candidate Information Form, and have one Endorsement Form submitted on his or her behalf. This allows for the standardization of the type of information required from a candidate, and the number of supporting nominations submitted. Both forms are available on the APS web site at www.the-aps.org/committees/index.htm and should be submitted by email only to nominations@the-aps.org. Nomination forms will not be kept on file. Those candidates not chosen for a committee appointment will need to update and resubmit their nomination package (Candidate Information Form and Endorsement Form) if they wish to be nominated the following year. Educational Programs:
Minority Travel Fellows
Host
Summer Research Teachers
Research Host The APS Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship allows undergraduate students the opportunity to experience biomedical research during the summer months. The Research Host applies in conjunction with the student. More information and the application form are available at www.the-aps.org/education/ugsrf/index.htm . Governance Each year the Society’s membership is asked for nominations for possible Councillors and President-elect. Members are welcome to nominate themselves and can have friends nominate them as well. The Section Chairs act as the Society’s Nominating Committee. It is their responsibility to select the final list of nominees each year for voting by the membership. Journals APS is proud of its 15 journals, which cover the range of physiology that is being studied in the world today. From basic science studies at the genomics level through cellular and organ-based studies to the applied studies at the whole organism and clinical levels, APS has a journal that is relevant for any author seeking to publish or any researcher looking for the latest research data. For more information on participating in the Society’s journals, see Becoming involved with journals. There are also other opportunities for involvement with the publications program though various committees (see above). Meetings In conjunction to the Experimental Biology meeting, APS holds several specialized conferences each year. Scientists interested in organizing a session at the Experimental Biology meeting are encouraged to contact their section’s Joint Program Committee representative. Those interested in organizing an APS Conference or Intersociety Meeting should submit proposals to the Meetings Department. Guidelines are available online at www.the-aps.org/meetings/aps/conf-proposal.htm. You may also contact the APS Meetings Office (email: meetings@the-aps.org; phone: 301-634-7967). Sections The Society is comprised of 12 sections. Sections are responsible for most of the scientific programming for the annual Experimental Biology meeting. Members are allowed to select one primary, one secondary and one tertiary affiliation. You may indicate your sectional affiliation by contacting the APS Membership Office (email: members@the-aps.org; phone: 301-634-7171) or through the online Members’ Only web site (www.the-aps.org). Sections contribute to the governance of the Society through representation on various APS Committees such as the Awards Committee, Liaison with Industry Committee, Nominating Committee, Section Advisory Committee, and others. Sections are governed by their Section Steering Committees comprised of members serving in various offices such as Chair, Treasurer, Program Representative, newsletter editor, etc. Section Steering Committee members are listed on the respective section’s web pages located online at www.the-aps.org/sections/index.htm.
