Salary Expectations

Postdoctoral Fellow
New Investigator

Postdoctoral Fellow
As a Postdoctoral Fellow, what can you expect to be making as a salary? Stipends for postdoctoral fellows are, for the most part, based on the National Research Service Award (NRSA) guidelines issued by the National Institutes of Health. The current stipend (2006) for an NIH-supported postdoctoral fellow starts at $36,995. It can increase to $41,796 after 2 years of experience. Those who remain as postdoctoral fellows for 7 or more years can earn $51,036. However, NIH states that federal funding should not exceed 5 years for postdocs.

NIH has pledged to raise the NRSA stipend levels 10-12% per year to reach a target salary of $45,000 for beginning postdocs.
