Interacting With Professional Societies


It is important to belong to and be an active member of the scientific community, through scientific societies, publications, and meetings.

The APS and the Association of Chairs of Departments of Physiology recommend that trainees understand the importance of and work to develop the following skills:

  1. Understand the benefits of belonging to and participating in a professional society
  2. Knowledge of appropriate societies to select for membership
  3. Understanding how to get the most benefit from attending scientific meetings
  4. Skill in presenting one’s research
  5. Knowledge of committees and selection process
  6. Skill in doing editorial work (Reviewing manuscripts) (postdoctoral fellows/new investigators)
  7. Ability to organize symposia/conferences (postdoctoral fellows/new investigators)
