What is Physiology?

Physiology (pronounced “fizzy-aw-low-jee”) is the study of life. Physiology helps us understand how the body works, from the smallest part (cells) all the way to the whole body. It helps us understand how different parts of the body work together. For example, the heart, lungs, and muscles must all work together perfectly to allow a soccer player to run and jump. It also helps us understand how our body reacts to different environmental conditions. Whether the weather is very hot or very cold, your body has ways to help the inside of your body stay at just the right temperature. If you plan to travel into space or into the depths of the ocean, physiology would help you understand how your body would react to these conditions. Physiology helps us understand how living creatures do all the things they do: eat, sleep, run, jump, even breathe and keep their hearts beating!
